10-15-12: Courtesy of YNN. Erie County homeowners may be digging even deeper into their pockets in the upcoming year. In his 2013 proposed budget, County Executive Mark Poloncarz is calling for a property tax increase. “We had no choice but to do a modest property tax increase. We are proposing a property tax increase of 3.4 percent, which will take the rate per thousand from 5.03 cents to 5.21 cents. It’s an 18 dollar increase,” Poloncarz said. Poloncarz says the county is facing hard fiscal realities with new state-mandated expenses and a decline in revenue lines. He says the property tax hike should not be a major worry for homeowners. “And this is how much it is a month folks, 1.50. 1.50, you can probably pull that much change outside of your car or the couch cushions in your living room.” That might not sit well with taxpayers, as Poloncarz campaigned on the promise that he would hold the line on property taxes. Fighting a 30 million dollar budget gap, the county executive is also proposing across the board job cuts.. mainly in social services and grant funding.
