After hours of closed door talks late Monday, a slim majority of six Erie County Legislators emerged with a pledge to pass a series of spending cuts instead of the County Executive’s proposed tax increase. Four Republicans and two Democrats will slash the jail overtime budget, social service programs and a fund for lawsuit settlements to close most of the gap. “So there are a bunch of cuts like that — those are the big ones — that make this 3.4% tax increase unnecessary,” said Leg. Kevin Hardwick, a Tonawanda Republican. County Executive Mark Poloncarz objected to the move, warning that the cuts will bring financial doom next year and possible program cuts. “Their amendments delete appropriations on paper while the county will still be have to pay for those expenses and incur those costs in 2013,” Poloncarz said.
