Erie County and New York State put up an even share of the $5.7 million in funding to replace the roof, build a new penthouse and completely replace the center’s heating, ventilation and air condition system. County Executive Mark Poloncarz said, “It certainly is an economic driver for all of western New York, especially downtown Buffalo. And I know there were some meets that were lost when this building was closed, but there would have been many more meets that would have been lost if this building had not been repaired.” The Flickinger Center has hosted many high school and college swimming tournaments since opening for the World University Games in 1993.
