BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Western New Yorkers are taking time to honor their working neighbors this Labor Day.  Labor Day celebrates the economic and social contributions of workers. It is also the symbolic end of summer for most Americans. It is a holiday that is often regarded as a day of rest.

Western New Yorkers celebrated Labor Day at a parade in South Buffalo. Erie County Comptroller Mark Poloncarz was the grand marshal of the parade.

Jobs, job creation, the economy and the potential recovery are topics that are on the minds of people Monday at the Labor Day Parade in South Buffalo.

Congressman Brian Higgins said, “I think that the great tradition of organized labor is well established here in western New York and throughout the country. This is a uniquely an American problem that has a uniquely American solution. It requires everybody to pull together, different political persuasions, union and not, this is an American issue.”

Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown said, “I think fortunately in the City of Buffalo with the growth and development of the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, we’re going to see more jobs in the life sciences, health industry here in Buffalo, western New York.”

New York State Senator Tim Kennedy said, “You know, Labor Day is all about celebrating men and women who go to work every single day to put food on the table for their families, to enhance a quality of life and to provide for their families. So, Labor Day is a celebration of work but it’s also a celebration of family.”
